1. Registering your address (Meldebehörde)

How to find your office

  • Saxony has 10 Landkreise and 3 kreisfreie Städte (Chemnitz, Dresden, Leipzig). The Landkreise are Bautzen, Erzgebirgskreis, Görlitz, Leipzig (Landkreis), Meißen, Mittelsachsen, Nordsachsen, Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, Vogtlandkreis and Zwickau. • Address registration is done by your town or municipality (Gemeinde/Stadt) where you live, not by the Landkreis. Find your office on the state portal Amt24.
  • Find your office: enter your town at amt24 Sachsen, amt24.sachsen.de (checked 2026-11-04), or at servicesuche.bund.de (checked 2026-11-04).

Dresden

  • You can go to any Dresden Bürgerbüro, regardless of your district. Source: dresden.de › buergerbueros (checked 2026-11-04)
  • Appointments online: termine-buergerbuero.dresden.de . Walk-in times without appointment: Tue and Thu 13:00–16:00 in Bürgerbüros Altstadt, Blasewitz, Cotta, Klotzsche, Leuben, Neustadt, Pieschen, Plauen, Prohlis. Fees payable by card/mobile only (girocard, Mastercard, Visa; not Amex). Source: same page (checked 2026-11-04)
  • Online Anmeldung of a main residence is possible with an online-ID (eID with PIN), NFC smartphone or card reader and AusweisApp; usually processed within three working days. Source: dresden.de › Wohnung-an-und-ummelden (checked 2026-11-04). If you hold an electronic residence permit (eAT), use the address check on wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de to see whether you can use it; otherwise register in person.
  • Online-Bürgerbüro offers video appointments (e.g. registering a secondary residence, Meldebescheinigung). Source: dresden.de › online-buergerbuero (checked 2026-11-04)

Leipzig

Chemnitz

Fees

  • Registration fee: ask when you book.

2. Ausländerbehörde

Who is responsible

  • Each Landkreis and each kreisfreie Stadt is a lower immigration authority (untere Ausländerbehörde); the Saxon Ministry of the Interior is the supreme authority. The Landesdirektion Sachsen is the higher authority in between. Source: smi.sachsen.de/auslaenderangelegenheiten-4151.html (checked 2026-11-05).
  • So: in Dresden, Leipzig or Chemnitz use the city's office; elsewhere use your Landkreis's Ausländerbehörde at the Landratsamt (not your town hall). Find it via amt24.sachsen.de or BAMF-NAvI bamf-navi.bamf.de/en/Themen/Behoerden (checked 2026-11-04).

4. Known differences vs nationwide guides

  • No central Ausländerbehörde for skilled workers in Saxony (unlike e.g. Niedersachsen); always the local office. Source: MIG PDF above (checked 2026-11-04)
  • Outside the three cities, the Ausländerbehörde sits at the Landkreis (Landratsamt), while address registration is local. Sources: smi.sachsen.de, kommunale-verwaltung.sachsen.de above (checked 2026-11-04)
  • Booking differs by city: Dresden books Ausländerbehörde appointments online/email/phone; Leipzig has no general ABH booking and works by online/post applications; Chemnitz's portal covers the Meldebehörde only. Sources above (checked 2026-11-04)
  • Dresden Bürgerbüros take card payment only. Source: dresden.de Bürgerbüros page (checked 2026-11-04)
  • Saxon e-payment (ePayBL) is used for online fees in Dresden's Online-Bürgerbüro. Source: dresden.de Online-Bürgerbüro page (checked 2026-11-04)
